How long does the surrogacy process take?

This is a great question and one that is asked often. There are so many variables involved that it is impossible to give a “one size fits all” answer. Firstly, the “time” referred to is the time between telling your Dr/Clinic you want to proceed with surrogacy and the date of the first embryo transfer. The main determinants are how organised you are in making your appointments and completing your paperwork; how busy your clinic is; and the timing of receipt of all your specialised reports. I have had some clients complete this process in 3 months (this is the shortest time, in my experience); and others who have taken closer to 9 months. It takes longer in Victoria because Victorian couples need the approval of the Patient Review Panel before they can undertake an embryo transfer. Some people find the paperwork overwhelming and are unsure where to start – it’s often a good time to have an initial discussion with a surrogacy lawyer at that point to get you started in the right direction. We have introduced a project management service so that we can complete the “organising” for you, as well as acting as your lawyer. Please contact us for more information.
